So yeah… part of my new year resolution is to not be overly nerdy, keep a good work life balance, and to be more up to date with my blogging! There are many weddings which are still sitting patiently in my hard drive, waiting to be blogged.

Here’s one that I absolutely have to share with you. Top 3 reasons why I love this wedding:

1. It’s a fun fun fun wedding! It all started when I read their wedding invitation card…

Seven years ago, in the faraway land of Cyberjaya, Ian met Joanne at a Christian Fellowship gathering and was smitten ever since. Thankfully, Mr & Mrs Lee Kah Meng and Mr & Mrs Chow Cheng Hock approved of their relationship and they didn’t have to elope. So come and witness the union of these two souls on 5 November 2011. They will profess their love and commitment to each other at Good Shepherd Church at 11am, and share the rest of their story with you over food and drinks at The Bankers Club from 6pm onwards.

2. The groom uh, looks a little unconventional.

3. The bridal party were dressed in our Stories’ theme colour! (light blue & brown!) Hip hip hurray!

I had a blast at Ian & Joanne’s wedding! Thank you for inviting us to be part of your wedding day!

Actually, we had heaps of fun with the games session… Ian had a bagful of expressions for us!

And the funny thing was that he snuck into the Sekeping Terasek room through a window! (Tip for all brides who are planning on having their wedding there, please make sure the window is barred!)

So let me expand on the little intro chapter of how they met. MMU Christian fellowship is a great place to make friends, encounter God and… well, meet girls. Joanne was rather cute, so she immediately caught his attention. Soon, Ian found out that Joanne needed transportation to get to church, and guess what? Ian had a car!

But there was a problem. Joanne was oblivious to Ian’s feelings. One day, he asked Joanne about the status of their relationship and that prompted her to start thinking about it. Sadly for Ian, he was given the dreaded answer…let’s remain as friends first.

After that, Ian left for a mission trip in Sarawak and didn’t have a phone connection for a few days. It was then that Joanne discovered she actually missed him! So she plotted a way to get out of this mess. After Ian came home, Joanne created a fake chat ID with the name of Joanna (she really does have a friend with that name), and messaged Ian as Joanna, trying to understand whether he still had feelings for Joanne.

He said yes!

Not long after that, Joanne was involved in a car accident and needed to be brought to a clinic for a check up. She called Ian who willingly came to the rescue. During that car ride, she brought up the subject of a relationship… and sealed the deal by holding his hand!

Every tea ceremony should have lots of laughter like this one!

During the dinner, guests were invited to take photos at Ian & Joanne’s little vintage corner.

Oh, and I absolutely adore this cake! The cake topper is gorgeous!!

On the 19th of July, Alex and I received a phone call from Pastor Margaret of our church. It was a call for help. Two Myanmar refugees, Zwe and Stellar were about to start their new lives as husband and wife, and they needed some help with the wedding.

If you did not read the background story as to how Alex and I got involved with this wedding, you’ll need to do that in order to fully comprehend this post.

So at 10.30pm on the 20th of July, Alex and I drove to church for the wedding ceremony. I was elated to see the bride looking so radiant in a white bridal gown, provided by DUMC’s wedding ministry. Amazingly, some months ago, someone had donated a handful of second hand wedding gowns to DUMC. Considering Stellar is a really petite girl (about my size, 5 feet!), it was miraculous that she managed to find a gown that fit her perfectly (ok maybe it is a tad bit long). Now if only my wedding gown was not in a box somewhere, I could have loaned Stellar my gown and the length would have been perfect.

If Zwe had chosen to wear Alex’s wedding suit, that would have been pretty weird, to see someone else in my gown and in Alex’s wedding suit! (not that I would have minded).

But Zwe chose one of Alex’s beige suits instead, and I think he looked smashing in it!

Did you know that in Myanmar, 55 million people speak a variety of 111 languages, but majority of them speak the Myanmar language.(source: myanmar.net). The Myanmar script draws its source from the Brahmi script.

Translated into English, the bible passage featured below talks about love:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. (1 Corinthians 13:4)

I really thank God for Katy (left) and Grace (right) who volunteered their make up services for this wedding. Grace even loaned her costume jewelry to Stellar!

Alex and Monica (below) helped out with the video. But before that, Alex had to help some of the groomsmen with their ties!

So at 1.30am (or ONE-THIRTY-AYY-EMM as Alex puts it), the wedding ceremony started. Since the ceremony was conducted in the Myanmar language, I had to guess what was happening, and anticipate the moment before it actually happened!

The two women featured in the image below were the key people who made this whole wedding happen. Sarah (left) and Pastor Margaret (right) coordinated everything from the counseling session to the wedding planning details. The night before, they were with Zwe and Stellar at church, going through all the wedding details. Sarah opened her home to many of these Myanmar refugees the night before the wedding, and Pastor Margaret availed herself to drive others to church for the wedding.

They have such a giving heart. I truly admire women like these, working behind the scenes humbly, yet contributing so much to the community.

After the ceremony ended, our church foyer was turned into a party zone! Really delicious Myanmar food was served and everyone was just having a good time. Some guys even showed off their break dancing skills!

My heart just swells knowing that many came forward to help with Zwe and Stellar’s wedding. I am just glad that I could be there to contribute in a small way. This wedding opened my eyes to see there that they are many refugees out there working amongst us, serving us (I found out one of them served chicken to me before at one of the shops in Tropicana City Mall!)… with the same dreams and aspirations that we have. They too desire love and acceptance. They long to have a place they can call home. For some of them who have lived here for years, Malaysia is their home.

There’s a verse in the Bible that says…

Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their work:

If one falls down,
his friend can help him up.
But pity the man who falls
and has no one to help him up!

Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?

Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

If you ever get to know Han How & Lydia, you’ll know that this is one relationship that is strong. It’s strong not just because of the bond of love that glues them together, but because Christ is in the centre of all they do. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Han How and Lydia’s wedding was filled with lots of love, laughter and warmth. The worship session in church was so uplifting and spirit filled, I could not help but sing along as I pressed the shutter button on my camera. Even Johan said that there was something different about this church wedding.

Han How & Lydia, I am so blessed to have been there at your wedding, photographing the both of you. I am always happy to be photographing weddings, but more so when the couple are personal friends of mine. Keep this strand strong between the both of you and God. All the best for the future!

29th April 2009…Where it all began…

Ben: We met on April 29^th 2009, when I was asked by a friend to help Angela move her furniture. After moving her out, she offered me a coke and we sat on her empty room floor talking about all sorts of things that you only talk about to long-time friends. She was in home shorts, had her hair tied up, glasses on (and contacts out), non-make-upped, and had a great smile right from the start. Love at first sight! And we were dating 2 months later.

Angela: A young ‘ang-moh’ guy who wore a properly-ironed black shirt and black jeans with a pair of Havaianas flip flops to move a heap of furniture… who does that?! But our friendship clicked instantly. I love talking about life – and he understands the depth of life. I love expressing myself in writing – and his passion is writing. I love knowing someone genuinely – and he allowed me to. That evening, we had Jon Schmidt playing Love Story Meets Viva la Vida (on repeat) in the background as we chatted for about an hour about everything. When he left, I thought, “wow, that was the best conversation I’ve had in years (literally, years!!)”  After he left, I thought very much of him, yes!!

14th July 2009… The Courtship…

Angela: I think he likes me. Umm… maybe not?

We went out for movies and dinners (with a bunch of friends) after April 29^th – but never really had the opportunity to talk as much as we did. So close yet so far, as the saying goes.

He likes me. Confirm.

We did not text much. But the SMS texting came in June 2009. Ben was in London for work – phone bills expensive, yes. But he texted! (I think every girl would identify with that tingling joy pulling our heartstrings). :) Not only that, it was about all sorts – ‘how was your day’; ‘what are you plans’; and he told me things he was doing then. He made me smile to myself all throughout.

He likes me. Double double confirm.

When he came back from London, we went out every night after work – for dinner; for strolls at the mall; for movies.

The Exception.

We love deep conversations. July 14^th – our topic revolved around ‘exceptions’ – opportunities, family and friends. The conversation then led to relationships – so Ben jumped at the chance and asked if we could both take an exceptional step – and I said, yes!

27 November 2010… The Proposal…

Ben: I had long-suggested that we should have a nice breakfast at a hotel in KL, but we had yet to get around to going. So on Friday 26^th, I called Angela late and asked her if I could take her to breakfast and could she wear a nice dress. I thought then that she might have guessed that something was going on.

The next morning I arrived at her house to pick her up, and she was in pretty (but ordinary) clothes! So somehow my plan was succeeding. I took Angela to Sudu at the KL Hilton for the buffet (I had scouted the parking and restaurant the day before so that things would run smoothly), and we found a nice quiet table. Then we enjoyed breakfast. During our second round, Angela wanted to Facebook update about breakfast. The problem was that my family knew I was proposing that morning, and if they saw anything from Angela then they would potentially say too much too soon. As Angela reached for her phone, I pulled out a little wooden box and put it in front of her, closed. That stopped her in her tracks. Then I asked her if she would marry me. Then I opened the box. Then she said yes! I (with shaking hand) put the ring on Angela’s finger, and she gave a huge smile. Then we stopped eating, chatted a little more, got the bill, and spent the rest of the day enjoying ourselves, eating, talking, and walking the malls.

28th May 2011… The Wedding…

Grace: I arrived early that morning at the Nomad Sucasa where Angela was getting ready. She was radiant, absolutely beaming. I thought it was cute that Angela kept posting little teaser images to her Instagram, Twitter and Facebook account as she was getting ready. Meanwhile, Johan was with Ben at The Gardens Hotel. When we arrived at Zion Lutheran Church, I gasped. The skies were absolutely beautiful! We’ve photographed at this church a number of times, but I’ve never seen it with such gorgeous skies before.

The entire ceremony and luncheon that followed was filled with love. You can just sense it. When I saw Ben & Angela looking so happy together, I couldn’t help but smile. Everything felt so right. At that point, I was reminded, marriage is never about that one event but a series of wonderful events in a lifetime.

“You’re an Asian Barbie!” gasped one of the guests who saw Ann on her wedding day. She was stunning and completely graceful. All those months of meticulous planning had finally paid off. The amazing venue, gorgeous decorations, everything down to the stationery was carefully thought through and planned (even the pre-wedding shoot). Ann even designed all the wedding stationery herself. In my books, she’s super-bride. I am still amazed at how beautiful this wedding was.

I can see how much Jamie loves Ann. They complement each other so well. Jamie & Ann, Alex and I enjoyed ourselves completely at your wedding. It is to date, the longest wedding day I’ve ever photographed (13.5 hours!). Thank you for being so hospitable and caring towards us. You treated us like long lost friends, and I truly appreciate that.

Family portraits…

It rained on the day of the wedding, so we could not really head outside for portraits. The Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove Chapel is one of the most coveted locations for weddings in the Gold Coast. Each chapel booking lasts 1.5 hours. Ann and Jamie had the chapel from 12.30pm-2pm, to do everything from set up, get married and take group photos. The next batch of guests from another wedding arrived at 2pm on the dot. It was a little stressful for me, but we got through it alright! :)

Cheng Leng (also known as Hillary) and Nicholas are friends of mine. Cheng Leng and I have known each other for years, since we were both in school. Then in college, we saw each other almost every other day… had meals together, went to pasar malam together, hung out with the same friends… we had a great time. After we graduated, Cheng Leng worked in KL for a while, but then she moved to Singapore a few years ago. I felt sad to see her go, but thank God for social media networks like Facebook. We kept in touch through the years.

It was great that I could witness the wedding ceremony of Nicholas and Cheng Leng. I wasn’t meant to be there for the wedding, but due to some turn of events, I could be there as a guest! I managed to sneak a few shots during the wedding (all the time a little worried if I was being an ‘Uncle Bob’ to the official photographer).

The one thing that immediately stands out about Cheng Leng – Her smile. She is such a warm and sincere person. I miss her hugs a lot. :)

So I had to give her a BIG hug.

This is Elfie, she went to school with me too (I have to admit, we had HOURS of fun playing with our Barbie dolls when we were young). The 3 of us were really close in college.

I love it that the flower girls, bridesmaids and matron of honour were dressed in the Nyonya kebaya outfit!

Nicholas sang beautifully during the wedding ceremony. He has such a good voice! The thing I admire most about Nicholas is his heart for the Lord. Cheng Leng complements him perfectly in this area.

The joy is infectious! :) Thanks Cheng Leng and Nicholas for your friendship! I am so glad I could be there to witness this historical moment! As you journey life together, may you continue to discover the amazing path God has planned for your life. And thanks for the door gift below… I think it’s a great idea! You are the bridge that links me back to sanity, everytime I fall. I’m reminded of this comforting fact, everyday when I look at you. These five words still hold true for me after all this time – Thank you for being simply you… and seeing me as perfectly flawed.

The dinner was held at the Banker’s Club as well. I’ve always loved the classic look of this location. Natasha Khoo of the Peak Xperience did an amazing job coordinating this wedding!

The tables were numbered and labeled according to songs.

Ok, I made that word up – Purplelicious. I just can’t help it. Every single detail in Kenny and PC’s wedding looked amazingly yummy. To top it off, it’s in one of my favourite colours – purple! It reminds me of days when I was younger, chewing and blowing grape flavoured bubble gum which usually just bursts onto my nose. It also reminds me of my lavender bedroom I had as a teenager. And my purple wedding four years ago. And so the moment I stepped into PC’s purple bedroom, I knew we were kindred spirits.

PC has an eye for details. I am sure she took months and months to perfect everything and it definitely showed on the wedding day! Everywhere I turned, there was something different to photograph. I love weddings like these! Firstly, check out her cool wedding shoes!

Don’t they both look amazing? I got to know Kenny years ago when I was a ‘wee’ bit younger, running around the futsal court in Taman Megah. I stopped playing futsal just before my wedding, and unfortunately lost touch with most of the guys there. But I was really happy to reconnect when Kenny contacted me last year about his wedding!

Kenny came to meet his bride in style…

And went off the same way! Look at the classic Rolls Royce that was the bridal car.

It was at a Halloween celebration that Kenny first met PC. The year was 2004. There was a green and blue dress code to match the colour theme. PC was annoyed with Kenny because he disagreed with her on the colour of her blouse she was wearing. He thought it was yellow, but she insisted it was lime green. (Sounds a little like my conversations with Alex!)

She barely knew him and there he was, strongly disagreeing and voicing his comments to everyone! Little did she know that Kenny had seen a picture of her before through a friend’s photo album and was keen to get to know her. The rest they say is history…

Kenny & PC:

It has not been an easy journey but rather, one that has been filled with complications. Our time has come, the timing is right and the pieces do fit now, after overcoming challenges faced through the years. We are opposites. He is the calm, and she is the storm. He is the bridge that links her back to sanity while she drives and inspires him to greater heights. We have a symbol for each other, him the bird, I the butterfly which explains the couple monogramme and the theme of the wedding.

Kenny and PC had written personalized quotes to each other, printed out and displayed. I think it’s so sweet!

I love it too when the couple’s parents’ photos are displayed during a wedding. It’s just so personal.

When Jun first contacted me about her wedding shoot in Singapore, I was ecstatic. I had never shot an actual day wedding in Singapore prior to this wedding. And then when she told me that her wedding was to be held at the Singapore Art Museum, I was squealing like a little girl (of course outwardly, I appeared all calm and professional). Anything with the words “artsy and colonial” definitely gained 200 brownie points in my book.

After a little crisis two days before Ben and Jun’s wedding, I was glad to have landed safely on Singaporean soil. Since Ben and Jun live in Perth, I did not have the chance to meet up with them until the day before the wedding. Instantly, I knew I could connect with them. Hearing their funny stories about each other made me laugh too. It’s so good I have to share it here…

Ben’s Story:

We met in a “safe” environment in church. The first impression that I got was: “this girl is bubbly and she can talk.” What attracted me was her outgoing nature and her ability to talk. This was the second time I met her in the company of 10 people. We went into a discussion about food in Malaysia and other random bits. The amazing thing was throughout the conversation, I was attentive to her, and found myself participating in that conversation in spite of having eight others talking in the background.

Growing up in a family that loves food, I come to realise soon enough is that she is a keen lover of food too and many of your dates were based on food tasting which was pretty cool but those dates certainly did not help my waist line.

One thing that never fails to amaze me is her beautiful voice. I can still remember the first time when I heard her sing in church. Words just don’t do justice to the sweet voice I heard that day. Mesmerise might be a good enough word to use and since, I have never allowed an opportunity to slip by to listen to her singing.

After knowing Jun for almost three years, I am still amazed at how thoughtful and caring she can be. The way she treats her family, her friends, “wow” is the word I use to describe it. Of course that caring nature does flow on into our relationship. Those times when I needed assistance, tender loving care, she has always been there for me. I am truly thankful to have found someone to spend my rest of my life with.

If there was an analogy that I could use to describe Jun, It would be a piece of onion with many layers. She has showed me different aspects from the sweet loving “Everything is fine” to the “This is not going to work”, Gung-ho attitude. All I can conclude is the more I get to know her, the more loveable she becomes.

Jun’s Story:
His smile. That caught my attention! I observed Ben from a distance at church. One of the first questions Ben asked me when we first met. “So, how old are you?” Totally rude!! But little did I know it was a compliment☺.

Ben carries himself confidently and has an amazing heart for people and Jesus. That’s his most attractive characteristic. Being a relatively pessimistic person, Ben compliments me beautifully with his outgoing/fun and positive outlook to life, and often times, although he doesn’t know, it takes my mind off my worries almost immediately. Ben always challenges my thinking and my capacity to grow as an individual.

He loves a good glass of wine, of which we both could appreciate and that means plenty of good food and dining experiences in our relationship! I love his outgoing personality, he openness and attentiveness in listening to my opinions. He laughs at my jokes even though they are not funny! Apparently, I have a reputation of telling really lame jokes!!

Through stressful periods, not so good days and happy days he has been a great support all the way! God has given me the best man I could ask for, someone that accepts me the way, my quirky habits and totally intolerable need for cleanliness.

We both love the outdoors, while dating we mentioned how we love the sun, outdoors. But little did we know to what degree and what aspects of outdoor do we appreciate. So during one bright shinny afternoon in spring, I proposed we go for a run. Now this happened, during the early stages of our relationship. Like anyone else, you’d give 100% to try impressing the guy. I decided to do something Ben enjoys. I decided to go for a run in Kings Park with him.

My definition of a run was 10 minute run, 10 minute leisure walking, another 5 minute run, and we call it a day.

Ben’s definition of a run: solid 10km run.

Little did I know I was out of breath after 10 minutes, when I decided to slow down, pulling out my bottled water for a sip and to take a breath (as you can tell, I was all prepared, even packed up like a pro for a hard core run, as Ben says it! ) Ben turned towards me and said ‘That was a good warm up! Let’s start the real run! I almost fainted. I wasn’t happy at all. But I couldn’t ‘lose face’ and I replied “Sure, bring it on”. To cut the story short, throughout the run, Ben was feeding me with jokes, stories of his pass, basically talking away while we run as a form of distraction to my tiredness and the distance ahead. I completed the 10km run with a black face, extremely exhausted but totally proud of my achievement! First lesson learnt, never ‘lie’ about your abilities, your true colours will show eventually.

I thought their stories were absolutely adorable! Well, as usual, I had the hardest time cutting down the number of images to show on the blog. I just could not do it! Especially since I had so many to share… with Ian doing an absolutely superb job as my 2nd photographer too. So yeah, brace yourself for a gigantic number of images!

Purple was the theme colour of the day. I love the colour purple!

And love love love the matching shoes the bridesmaids wore that day!

I have never seen so much confetti in my life before. Ben and Jun were absolutely sprayed with confetti from top to bottom!

Dinner was at the Carlton Hotel, Singapore. I have seen playing cards given out as wedding favours in 2 Singaporean weddings so far. I think it must be a Singaporean thing… :)

There were many tears shed that night.

Even Ben was not spared it.

I am so touched by the warmth of the families and friends who were there that night.
