It’s already December! Just because we’re social distancing, doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate this magical holiday season with a small party at home. :) It’s a good opportunity to end the year well and make it special for our family and loved ones. To make sure we’re equipped with some home party decor styling tips, we had a chat with the talented event stylist Alice Tan from iheartparty. If you’re planning to host a small party soon, or even if its just for your family, here are five tips to help you get started.

1. I’m hosting a small party at my home and I would like to decorate the place really well. Where do I begin and what does the process look like?

This is where the fun begins! You can start by choosing a theme and colour palette. Easy tip, go on to Pinterest and look for some inspiration or use a colour palatte tool like Cooler to help you find a suitable palette. Then create a budget so that you don’t overspend. Don’t feel discouraged if you have a limited budget to work with. There’s always a creative solution for party decorating!

2. How much time should I allocate to the styling process?

This depends on how elaborate you’d want your party decoration to be. Planning the decor and deciding what you’d like could take about an hour. Preparing and setting it all up can be a bit more more time consuming. If you don’t have time, you can always delegate or outsource help from a friend, your spouse, or better yet – a decorator or a party stylist! There’s one for every budget and need.

3. If I’m not able to spend much on decor but I still want the place to look attractive, what smart hacks would you recommend?

I’d recommend some small touches that would make the place look more put together or prettier. One way to do this is how you present food. Make sure that your dishes are not all on the same level on the buffet line as everything will look very flat on the table. You could also print your own food signs and placards for your guests.

4. What is the one area of styling that home party decor should not compromise on?

If it’s a sit down dinner party, it would definitely be the table centrepiece. However, most people now would usually either have it buffet style so that it’s easier to manage for larger house parties. In that case, make sure that there’s a fun backdrop for your guests to take photos with to remember the occasion! This does not need to be too complicated, it could just be a living room corner with a printed banner or helium balloons.

5. What can I do with my decor items after the party?

If they are flowers, you could always keep them in your house after the party. If they are a lot of DIY items, see if they can be recycled or reused as decor items for your home or the garden. One way to ensure that nothing goes to waste is to borrow items from friends, or rent what you need from a decor rental company. Just return the items after the party.
