Comma Pre-Marital Series 04: Communication & Conflict

As a wedding photographer, I have seen many couples going into marriage with rose tinted glasses, so in love with each other and oblivious to each other’s faults. But just one year into marriage, it is easy to find the ‘honeymoon’ phase has passed and now, the glasses are removed, and both eyes are wide open. I believe it is important to go into marriage with a realistic point of view while maintaining some form of idealism.

Conflict will surely happen in any marriage. Unmet expectations can creep up easily, and soon, you’ll find yourselves dealing with more than you can handle. Don’t worry, this is really normal in any relationship. The important thing is to develop the tools to help you deal with conflict when it happens. In our interview below, John and Radiance are an everyday married couple, sharing how they handle conflict in their marriage.

Wedding at Quat Quatta, Melbourne: Benny & Esther

I am always really honored whenever a couple decides to fly my team and I to another country to photograph their wedding. It really is a big deal, because it meant that they chose you over every other vendor they found in that city. I was also really excited when I found out their wedding location – a beautiful Victorian mansion named Quat Quatta. I love the classic interior and exteriors! What was special about this wedding were all the loving, detailed planning that Benny and Esther did for their wedding. I love the turquoise colour theme, the Volkswagen Kombi that was so chic, and also how they incorporated their love of coffee into the wedding with a coffee mixing ceremony! Even their wedding ring ‘pillow’ was a unique book!

The dinner decorations at the Sandringham Yacht Club were beautiful with the huge arch above the main table (it had mandarin oranges in it!). We were also blown away at the delicious looking wedding cakes, not one, but three! Thank you, Benny and Esther, for bringing us all the way to Melbourne, Australia. Wishing you years of marriage bliss and may the honeymoon continue years and years from now!

Steph is an established lifestyle and portrait photographer based in Singapore, a dedicated mother and a friend. I got to know her years ago, and though we only connected over 2 or 3 face to face conversations, she is the kind of person that makes you feel as if you’ve known her for years. In those short moments together, we chatted about life, the challenges about running a photography business and being a mom at the same time. I feel as if I have found a kindred spirit in her.

Steph is now pregnant with her 3rd child, and I am so pleased to have the honour of photographing her maternity portraits. It was such a pleasure meeting Martin too, who has such a warm and easy going personality. Looking forward to seeing the little one’s photos soon! Lots of love from Malaysia.

Wedding at Hatten Hotel, Malacca: Weng Yue & Hui Yen

People say the secret to a long life is laughter… and the secret to a long-lasting relationship is laughing together. We’re pretty sure this will be true for Weng Yue and Hui Yen!

They are like two peas in a pod that fit together so cozily. Each different in their own ways but yet sharing a solid and grounded relationship built on trust. They liken their relationship to a blue-chip stock… with very little fluctuations and steady growth! That shows just how down-to-earth they both are.

They met in university in Malacca and maintained a long-distance relationship for a number of years after their studies before Hui Yen relocated to Singapore to be with Weng Yue. They have not looked back since. Life together is comfortable, with very few “high volume” moments. They are self-proclaimed non-conformists (but not intentionally!) and that is part of what keeps their comfortable life exciting, we suspect.

The wedding was held in the beautiful town of Malacca, where Weng Yue hails from. His mum is Nyonya so there were lots of Nyonya elements incorporated in the wedding. This easy-going couple made the team feel very much at home with them and were game to pose even under the hot sun with no complaints. Thank you Weng Yue and Hui Yen, for your kind hospitality in Malacca. We wish you both a lifetime of fun, happiness and adventure in your marriage!
