Family Portraits: Brian, Rita and little Lauchlan

I first got to know Brian through my sister Lina, as they share a deep passion for the outdoors and all things adventurous. I know that Brian is really good with his hands… in fact, a lot of the furniture at his home was lovingly handcrafted by him, including the cute little wheelbarrow / wagon you see below! Lauchlan is a really lucky boy! Then I got to know Rita. Lauchlan is her fourth child but what amazed me was that she delivered him at the age of 50! I truly admire her strength and tenacity in running after a small child at this season of her life (who coincidentally, is one month older than Krysta).

She is a truly dedicated mother, and she dotes on little Lauchlan. For a few months, Krysta and Lauchlan attended swimming classes together at a private home. We all enjoyed singing to Old McDonald’s, Humpty Dumpty as the little ones learnt to dip underwater and enjoy the pool.

I was privileged to have photographed their family (and Rita’s extended family!) one day at their home. Thank you for inviting me into your home, and for your friendship. I believe Lauchlan will grow up one day to be a dashing young man, with a heart as big as his mom, and an adventurous spirit like his dad.

Newborn: Kay Lynn

Yee Ming and I go way back, to when we were little kids, growing up in the town of Malacca. She’s always a cheerful person, great company and a loyal friend. As time went by, we grew up, I moved to KL, and somehow we didn’t really keep in touch through the years. But thank God for Facebook because then we could get reconnected again!

Yee Ming and her husband Boon Hock now shuttle back and forth from JB to Malacca to run their own business. I personally don’t know how she does it with a newborn every 2 weeks or so, but I guess Kay Lynn has learnt to adapt, waking up in JB one day, and then another day in Malacca.

I was pleased to have been able to photograph little one month old Kay Lynn at their apartment in JB recently. Truly happy for the both of you, and I wish you lots of amazing moments with the little one!

Family Portraits: Albert, Serina & Alyssa

My first ever contact with Albert and Serina happened during a time when I was just a baby in the wedding photography industry. I hardly had any portfolio under my belt, and yet, they chose to hire us to cover their wedding. It was my first time too at Banker’s Club. What blew me away during their wedding was their beautiful first dance and performances that entertained the guests through out the night. Waltzes, flamenco… it almost made me dance too! We ended the night consuming lots of delicious strawberry fondue.

After the epic wedding, I had the privilege of photographing Serina again at a dance studio. She was moving to Kuching to set up her own dance studio (Albert’s expertise is Jiu-Jitsu, which is another successful business altogether!). We had a great time as she twirled in her belly dancing costume, looked stunning in her flamenco outfit, and jazz danced for the camera.

Fast forward to 2014. It is a true story of a client turned friend. I am so glad to have developed a friendship with this wonderful couple. Many of those who know them would testify  that they are an incredibly talented and giving couple. Truly a blessing to know them.

In December 2012, my daughter Krysta and their daughter Alyssa were born just one day apart of each other. Alyssa picked the better date and came out on 12.12.12. One year later, I am pleased to have been part of their family history, yet again.

Family Portraits: Jordan + Tammy + 2

It’s amazing to think that Tammy and I met close to 30 years ago when we were in kindergarten. And now she has her own daughter Jaelyn who will be going to kindergarten soon-ish as well! What a circle it has been. I am so glad that I was there to photograph Tammy and Jordan’s wedding in 2008 and also her maternity portraits in 2010… and now, their little family! Am really happy that my photography skills have grown through the years together with their little family. They were one of my earliest clients when I started out in the wedding industry years ago in 2007.

Tammy and Jordan, I love seeing our kids together… I hope that Jaelyn, Jenson, Krysta and all our friend’s kids will grow up enjoying each other’s company as much as we have enjoyed friendships with our group of friends throughout the years. As we grow older, let’s take some time to really smell the roses, and spend time with our families…that’s what matters most.

Beauty in the Ordinary: Alex, Grace & Krysta

My father was an avid photographer – the only one in the extended family when I was a child. Clad with a manual SLR, he captured some moments in the family that I think are very precious. Being the sentimental person that I am, I love the photos so much because dad simply captured our ordinary day – they are pictures of me falling asleep when I was doing my homework, my little brother giving my mom a kiss when he was 3 years old and little sister who made a face at the camera because dad was trying to take a shot of her eating.

So when Alex suggested to do a photo session with them at home doing ordinary stuff, I jumped right into it. I thought it would be different from the ones that we have done before and also, new ideas often excite me. Hehe.

I went in with the idea of shooting like how a Nat Geo photographer would shoot – photojournalistic. Some nice wide angles to give an idea of the environment, unstaged, raw and at the same time, contemporary. I thought about the shots that would simply tell a story of their everyday lives – the kind that would make the family feel nostalgic when they look at the shot 10, 20 years down the road.

The shoot turned out to be a very fun and satisfying one! Alex, Grace and Krysta were so natural in front of the camera as I pranced around them with a black piece of something (camera) on my face. I also kinda forgot that I was shooting my boss. I guess it’s a good thing because if I had that thought hovering around my head, I would have a lot of pressure!

I really do hope you like the photos, boss. Hehe.
