Family and Couple Portraits: Nick & Josephine

I remember this shoot well. It was early in the morning and I drove out of my home just before the break of day. Getting caught in a jam and was worried about being late.

I remember reaching the park, where the family was all ready for the shoot. The first thing I noticed was Josephine’s warm and friendly smile. I felt connected to the couple almost immediately because of their easy going personalities.

Nick and Josephine met each other at work and are recently engaged. I recently met Josephine again at the BFM Enterprise Breakaway and found that she is now running a company providing nursing services. A company born out of her mom’s own disappointing experience with nursing services for her dad, who had suffered a major stroke and sadly was not able to join us for the shoot.

Together with Weiming, we set out to provide this family and couple the family portrait that they truly deserve. Here’s some of our favourites from the session.

Josephine’s brother, David, was a little shy in front of the camera, but eventually he warmed up. :)

Studio Portraits: Chong Family

Taking on this shoot for the lovely Chong family reminded me a lot of the season in my life where I used to work at Vital Years, where I needed to connect with boisterous and fun toddlers. Little Ethan is cheeky, playful and loves singing. Little Katelyn is shy in the beginning, but is a ball of energy once the ice is broken. Baby Isaac is simply adorable. It must be a handful for parents, Adrian & Michelle!

Reusing old film strips

Relocating is such a difficult thing to do, for me at least. Not so much logistical hassle, but emotional. Leaving somewhere I know oh-so-well to another feels like I am leaving a big part of my life behind.

But that’s not what I want to talk about today.

You see, while packing for the move, I discovered a paper bag filled with old camera film strips my father has kept over the years. My mother was about to throw them all away, but being the sentimental person that I am, I knew I had to find a way to save it, for old memory’s sake.

So I’ve decided to use it to make a simple film decoupage. :)

If you are as sentimental as me, or if your hands are just itching to do something crafty, here’s something you can do too!

Studio Portraits: Li-Ann

Li-Ann has big dreams and she is determined to make it happen. With the support of her mom, Lani and aunt, Zena, she’s embarking on a new and exciting journey to become a model.

When they came to us, of course we’re more than happy to help her fullfil this dream. She needed professional photos to create a comp card for a competition that she was going to be part of in the States, so I know I needed it to be perfect for her.

Shooting this set was a little out of my comfort zone – I am very used to the happy and fun kind of family portraits. This shoot required me to tell a story of her personality and at the same time, project her ability to adapt to the demands of the modeling world.

Tips on Stage Photography

I recently volunteered to photograph a charity event for Project Liber8, which is a human trafficking awareness campaign. They have invited some local bands to play at Zouk KL, it was a rocking night with powerful music and talent, coming together to bring awareness against human trafficking! Real powerful stuff.

As for photography experience, I have to say, it’s different from what I am so used to shooting for our clients at Stories! Here’s what I can share with you from the experience I gained.
