Newborn & Lifestyle Family Portraits: Calvin & Melissa

Melissa was still under confinement when we did this at-home newborn and family photos shoot for them. She and her husband Calvin were so nice, they let us pretty much have free reign of the house as shooting options! Their boys were so much fun to hang out with and spent a great deal of time showing us their room and their toys – as kids do. When the photos were delivered shortly after, she wrote us a review that totally made our day:

“I loved the whole experience! From enquiry with Wai Teng [the studio manager] to the warm video explanation with Grace the founder. We are very happy with the photographer Chi Yin and her assistant. Chi Yin was experienced with handling our newborn baby and they were well prepared with props!

We are not good with poses but all the photos turned out beautiful because they are natural and we were constantly assured during the photography session. I truly appreciate their tips on how to pose better and where to take pictures around our house as I was under confinement at the time. I know it’s not easy to take pictures with our newborn and two other cheeky boys aged 5 and 7 then.

The whole session turned out to be like a fun family activity with no pressure. We love the photos ! Thank you! Would definitely come back for family photos again.”

We are always so grateful that our job involves meeting wonderful people like them. We always strive to give our best. So hearing feedback like this helps us know we’re doing something right, and we never take it for granted.

Family Portraits: Roy & Pek Yee

Seven years ago, we photographed Roy and Pek Yee’s wedding in Kuala Lumpur. The couple had met in Shanghai and settled there as newlyweds. Early this year, when they were back for Chinese New Year, we got to photograph them again and this time – with an additional family member! Leah is the cutest little lady you ever did meet. We did a series of casual “at home” portraits at St Regis Residences (their “home” for the holiday) and Pek Yee’s sister joined in as well.

These kind of casual family shots are some of our favourites. Most of the time, its just us capturing all the little real moments that happen between husband and wife, mother and child, father and child, or other family members. You look at the photos and remember how soft your child’s skin feels against your cheek, how her hair curls perfectly at the ends, and how her trusting little eyes dance when they look into yours. You remember how beautiful your wife looks when she’s cuddling the children, or how incredibly happy you felt being held in your husband’s arms. These photos are like time capsules of memories and feelings that only you have the privilege of fully enjoying, and we absolutely love capturing them for you. More photos below!

Studio Family Portraits: Darrel & Andrea

Darrel and Andrea work in Singapore while their son, Julien lives with his grandparents in Kuala Lumpur. They come back to KL every weekend to spend time with him. “We take Julien out as much as possible to expose him to the outside world,” Andrea told us.

The day they came to our studio for photos was to celebrate Julien’s first birthday. Kids grow up so quickly, and this was a great way to remember everything about him at this age. His laughter, his small hands and feet, and how comforting it feels to hold him in their arms.

Weekends like this are really precious for them. “It’s always hard to say goodbye when we return to Singapore. We’ll bring him to Singapore when he’s slightly older,” Andrea says.

Meeting Darrel, Andrea, and little Julien reminds us how a photographer’s job is never just about taking pretty photos. It’s about bringing meaning to people’s lives and supporting them on the journey with their loved ones. Thank you for giving us this privilege. More photos below!

Outdoor Family Portraits: Kelvin, Francine, and Caleb

The Singapore Botanic Gardens made the perfect backdrop for Kelvin and Francine’s family photo session. The colours and outfits they wore looked amazingly comfortable, making them feel comfortable as we moved around the park too. Don’t you just love how these shades of blue, khaki, and cream complement each other and the whole photo?

The session also involved extended family members: Kelvin’s mom and sister, and Francine’s brother and her parents. We love how they also used colour to differentiate both sides of the family, and yet unite them harmoniously. Of course, the one who really stole the show has got to be their son, Caleb.  This little lad warmed up so easily and was clearly the life and energy of the party!

What is Lifestyle Photography?

Do a Google search for a ‘family photographer’ and chances are, you’ll see lifestyle photography as a service too (that’s what we offer as well). “What’s lifestyle photography?” you might wonder.  Well, this article will be addressing that. After this, you can add one more photography term to your vocabulary with confidence and clarity. Most importantly, you’ll know what it means for you!

A lifestyle photographer is someone who documents a person’s lifestyle by capturing photos of their real-life events, situations, or their milestones in an artistic manner. It celebrates the art of the everyday. Many photos you see of other families and couples having the best ‘candid’ moments captured while doing ‘everyday-looking-things’ are often categorised as lifestyle photography. A true lifestyle session is full of candid moments that happen when a photographer gets to follow their subjects to places that they frequently spend time at.

However, what really goes on behind the scenes is that there’s a highly skilled photographer directing all the shots! Many of these ‘candid moments’ don’t happen by themselves, and they may not always happen in places that are meaningful to the people in the photo. The reality is, its usually a photographer’s job to create opportunities for these moments to happen and quickly snap the photo whenever it does. Here are some examples:
